April 23-24 : A Compelling letter portrait using masks!
(That means put them away!)

WHAT ARE WE LEARNING: Adobe Photoshop
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT: Adobe Photoshop, computer application software used to edit and manipulate digital images. Photoshop was developed in 1987 by the American brothers Thomas and John Knoll, who sold the distribution license to Adobe Systems Incorporated in 1988.
HOW WILL MY TEACHER KNOW WHAT I LEARNED: You will practice different tools and techniques and gradually show your success!
This will save the file to your PHOTOGRAPHY or Downloads folder!
Shortcut: Shift + Ctrl + S
(or File: SAVE AS)
Save as Type: PHOTOSHOP!
Then click Save to Cloud Documents
Save to CREATIVE CLOUD!
Click the Save to CREATIVE CLOUD button
Name the photo:
"Your Initials LETTER PORTRAIT"
Click SAVE
Select the SUBJECT layer...then on the top tabs hover over SELECT and choose SUBJECT
Once you see the "marching ants" click the LAYER MASK ICON at the bottom of the Layers Panel (Make sure the subject layer is selected!)
With the new mask selected (white box around the mask in the layers panel) Go to the SELECT tab at the top and choose SELECT AND MASK
In View Mode...Make sure to have ON LAYERS selected!
Click REFINE HAIR at the top of the panel!
Select the REFINE brush (the second brush on the left) and paint over her hair a bit!
NOTE: Typically, refine hair is enough!
On the Properties panel, scroll down and select Output to LAYER MASK. Then Click OK!
We now need to APPLY the mask and make it permanent...
Click on the LAYER MASK (make sure you grab the MASK thumbnail and not the layer itself!) and drag it to the trash can on the bottom of the layers panel
In the pop up box, click APPLY!
If you accidently throw the layer away, Ctrl + Z is UNDO!
Click the EYE icon in the layers panel to reveal the Blue Layer and Letter Layer
With the LETTER LAYER selected, Select the Magic Wand and click the letter A to select the Letter A (You should see the "Marching Ants" around the A)
Tip! You can also Ctrl + Click the Layer Thumbnail to select!
Select the BLUE layer in the layers panel
and click the Add Layer Mask Icon (Rectangle with circle)
SELECT THE LETTER LAYER
With the LETTER LAYER selected, Select the Magic Wand and click the letter A to select the Letter A (You should see the "Marching Ants" around the A)
Tip! You can also Ctrl + Click the Layer Thumbnail to select!
Select the SUBJECT layer in the layers panel
and click the Add Layer Mask Icon (Rectangle with circle)
Click the Eye icon next to Letter to turn off the layer (it should reveal the subject now INSIDE the letter A)
You will see a white line around the thumbnail of the mask!
Make sure WHITE is selected as the foreground color
Select the Brush tool
Change the settings: Size 80 px and Hardness 80%
(Make sure the LAYER MASK on the Subject layer is selected!)
Paint with white to reveal areas of the subject outside of the letter "A" mask area, such as the subject's right shoulder and her hair!
Remember! Paint with black to HIDE parts of the subject, such as areas where too much was revealed!
Click the Add Layer Style Icon (fx) and choose Drop Shadow
Click RESET TO DEFAULT ...
Set the size to 100 px and leave the rest!
CLICK OK
Remember! If your image area is dark, make your signature WHITE. If the image area is light, make your signature BLACK!
Make sure you have added the vignette AND your signature!
Each image MUST have YOUR signature on the bottom right!
You will export 1 image:
Your Initials LETTER PORTRAIT.jpg
Go to our Classroom in TEAMS
Select Assignments
Select
Photoshop: LETTER PORTRAIT!
Scroll down to MY WORK
Click +ATTACH
Click UPLOAD FROM THIS DEVICE
Select DESKTOP (on the left) then the PHOTOGRAPHY Folder
Find the JPG file we EXPORTED and select it:
Your Initials LETTER PORTRAIT.jpg
Click OPEN
Wait for file to upload
File will show up below under My Work
CLICK TURN IN!
NOTE: There MUST be a JPG file (that have been adjused in Photoshop) attached to get credit. Simply clicking TURN IN will not do!!!

Remember...once selected click the layer mask icon in the layers panel! (you have done this before!

Do this for each Layer Mask (E, X, C, I, T, E, D)

Select the EXCITED LAYER
Select the Magic Wand Tool and click the letter E to select the Letter E
Select the E1 Picture layer in the layers panel and click the Add Layer Mask Icon (Rectangle with circle)
Yes it will seem as if the image disappears but the EXCITED word (in white) is still visible. We will turn this off after all the pictures layers have masks!
Following the instructions above, use the Magic Wand Tool to select each letter on the EXCITED layer (individually) and create a layer maask on the cooresponding layer!
Example: Select the X with the Magic Wand Tool. Then select the X Picture layer and click the Add Layer Mask Icon and so on!
When you are done it will look like this!
TIP: Remember to select the LETTER, click the EXCITED Layer first then click on the letter!
Click the Eye icon next to EXCITED to turn off the layer

Do this for each Picture layer!
Example: Click the X Picture layer mask and paint the subject's head and hair back! (Make sure the LAYER MASK THUMBNAIL is selected!)
On each Layer Mask, Click the Add Layer Style Icon (fx) and choose Drop Shadow
Click RESET TO DEFAULT ...
Set the size to 100 px and leave the rest!
CLICK OK
Now do this for EACH LAYER!
Remember! If your image area is dark, make your signature WHITE. If the image area is light, make your signature BLACK!
