WHAT ARE WE LEARNING: Adobe Photoshop: Gradient and a Layer Mask
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT:
How to add a gradient to a layer mask: Create a layer mask. Then use the Gradient tool to draw a white to black gradient on the layer mask. The gradient adds black, white, and multiple shades of grey to the layer mask.
The effect of a gradient on a layer mask: The black part of the gradient hides content on the masked layer. The white part of the gradient shows content on the masked layer. And the shades of gray in between partially hide the masked layer, creating a gradual, soft transition between images.
HOW WILL MY TEACHER KNOW WHAT I LEARNED: You will practice different tools and techniques and gradually show your success!
At this point, student should know how to name files correctly AND turn in the correct format!
(scores will be 0/incomplete if incorrect!)

A hand with a water droplet on the top layer
and an image of green hills on the bottom layer
We are going to add a layer mask to the top layer to smoothly transition from the hand down to the green hills at the bottom.
Make sure you have the Hand layer selected
Click the Add Layer Mask button on the bottom of the Layers panel
You should now see a layer mask added to the layer (on the right)
First make sure the Foreground color is WHITE and background color is BLACK
If it isn't simply click the bent arrow to switch them or press X on the keyboard!
Once selected, you should see a white to black gradient on the top left of the screen.
If you don't see that, Click the pull down and select Basics and choose the first gradient
Starting at the center of the hand, click and pull to "draw" an imaginary line to about a third of the way in the dark reflection
The direction in the line you draw effects the gradient you have created!
When you release you mouse, you can see the hand image in the top photo gradually fading into the green hills of the image below!
If you hold the ALT key and click the mask you can see exactly what the mask is doing
The WHITE on the top allows the top of the hand image to be seen, while black at the bottom hides the hand image and in-between we see a gradual progression from light to dark to transition the blend!
Make sure WHITE is in the foreground
Set the brush at about 200 px and 0% hardness
This let's us see more of the content on the hand layer
Remember! If your image area is dark, make your signature WHITE. If the image area is light, make your signature BLACK!
Make sure you have added the vignette AND your signature!
Each image MUST have YOUR signature on the bottom right!
