WHAT ARE WE LEARNING: Adobe Photoshop Masking Layers
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT: Layer masks in Photoshop are an essential tool for enhancing your creativity and flexibility when working with images. They allow us to hide or reveal parts of an image or layer without permanently erasing any content. If your layer mask isn't a perfect fit, open it in Photoshop's Select and Mask workspace to fine-tune the mask with powerful edge-refining tools.
HOW WILL MY TEACHER KNOW WHAT I LEARNED: You will practice different tools and techniques and gradually show your success!
This will save the file to your Photography or Downloads folder!
Shortcut: Shift + Ctrl + S
(or File: SAVE AS)
Save as Type: PHOTOSHOP!
Then click Save to Cloud Documents
Save to CREATIVE CLOUD!
Click the Save to CREATIVE CLOUD button
Name the document:
"First Name Last Name DOG MASK"
Click SAVE
You are saving as a PHOTOSHOP DOCUMENT!
Let's Begin!
Click on the WINDOW tab on top
Select Workspace>Essentials (Default)
This will help us be consistent during the class!
Select the DOG layer
Use the Quick Selection tool
Click the Brush Options and set the brush size to 40 px
to select them. You can drag more than once to get everything selected
Don't worry about selecting the tiny whiskers!
If you include part of the green by mistake, click the SUBTRACT ICON at the top (3rd from the left in the group). Then brush over that area to substract it from your selection!
The mask is based on your selection of the dog. The mask hides the green wall, which reveals the landscape on the layer below!
Remember! If your image area is dark, make your signature WHITE. If the image area is light, make your signature BLACK!
Make sure you have added the vignette AND your signature!
Each image MUST have YOUR signature on the bottom right!
You will export 1 image:

That will cause Photoshop to make a selection around the tree.
It's a pretty rough selection
At the bottom of the layers panel, click on the layer mask button
Now we have a layer mask
This is ok because we are going to be able to refine that in our select and mask workspace
This is a separate interface from regular Photoshop
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE LAYER MASK SELECTED NOT THE IMAGE THUMBNAIL
(You should see a WHITE box around it!)
Choose SELECT AND MASK
In Select and Mask mode, there are alternate tools and properties
A good place to start, is to select how we want to view our mask
Click the View pull down in the properties panel
Select On Layers
Take a look around the edges of the tree, we can see there is a lot of white there.
Drag the RADIUS slider to the right (to about 140)
What happened?
There is still a lot of white on the INSIDE of the tree. Let's choose the Refine Edge Brush Tool
Change the brush size to around 200 (large!)
Now simply start dragging over the tree
Notice that now we can start to see through the tree to the lake
Notice the trunk and bottom are also refined!
Once we are happy with the mask, we need to output a refined layer mask
On the right, go to output setting and click on output to
Choose New Layer with Layer mask
We now have two layer masks
The original and the REFINED layer Mask!
If you click on the refined mask, you can see a lot more detail!
Remember! If your image area is dark, make your signature WHITE. If the image area is light, make your signature BLACK!
Make sure you have added the vignette AND your signature!
Each image MUST have YOUR signature on the bottom right!
