Depth of Field

Controlling how much of your picture is in focus

WHAT ARE WE LEARNING: Depth of Field

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT: A higher depth of field would see the whole image from foreground to background sharp and in focus, a lower depth would result in blurry backgrounds and blurred elements in the foreground too. Understanding this helps us create unique and different perspectives in photography!

HOW WILL MY TEACHER KNOW WHAT I LEARNED: You will follow along with instruction and use what we have learned to create amazing photos using DOF!

For Part 1 of assignment...

DEPTH OF FIELD (DOF)

The amount of space focused on at one time controlled by the aperture.

Depth of Field...

Is a critical skill that any photographer needs to know how to control.

It allows you to decide the “look” of your images

The Assignment...

For this assignment, you will need to take photographs of the same object twice. The goal is to capture the essential elements of the subject and draw the viewer's attention to those specific details.

For this assignment, you will need to pick 3 DIFFERENT subjects

YOU choose what you are shooting! Do NOT just copy these!

To shoot DOF...

For these shots you WILL NEED A TRIPOD!

CHANGE SOME SETTINGS...

Set your camera to AV!

This will allow you to adjust the Aperture and not worry about the Shutter Speed!

AV (Aperture Value)

Set your ISO to AUTO!

Click the Right Cross Key

Lets change the Drive mode to SINGLE SHOOTING

This means you click the button one shot at a time!

Wide/Deep Depth of Field:

Photo 1:

For one shot, shoot it at F22.

This should give a GREAT/LARGE Depth of Field.

Shallow/Narrow Depth of Field

Photo 2:

For the other shot, open up the aperture as WIDE as you can. (f4 if possible)

This will depend on how much you’re zoomed in.

This will give a SHALLOW/NARROW Depth of Field.

Take your time... Focus on one idea and take a few options. Don't rush!

Downloading your photos...

To Split the screens (to see them better):

Editing your photos!

Open Photoshop

Click OPEN (on the left)

Navigate to Desktop> PHOTOGRAPHY folder>DOF

Select ONE of the subjects/images you would like to work with.

Always select the best image based upon three criteria:

Does it work for your assignment?

Is it a good exposure?

Is it in focus?

Click OPEN

CHOOSE YOUR BEST IMAGES! If they don't meet the criteria, check out a camera and go shoot some more!

SAVE (as) YOUR DOCUMENT!

Shortcut: Shift + Ctrl + S

(or File: SAVE AS)

Save as Type: PHOTOSHOP!

Then click Save to Cloud Documents

Save to CREATIVE CLOUD!

Click the Save to CREATIVE CLOUD button

Name the first Shallow DOF document:

"First Name Last Name Shallow1"

Name the first Wide document:

"First Name Last Name Wide1"

(You get the idea...when you are done you will be turning in 6 images!)

Click SAVE

If you have selected your best Depth of Field photo you can do the same process for other Depth of Field photo of the same subject!

(Open through Photoshop, Save as, Save to Creative Cloud)

Editing your photos!

Adjusting using layers

Remember to use an ADJUSTMENT LAYER (in the layers panel: click the adjustment icon) so it is non-destructive

Adjust such things as:

Brightness/Contrast
Exposure
Vibrance
Hue/Saturation
Color Balance
Black & White

Make Adjustments as needed! (And they are needed!)

Edits are subjective! They are what YOU feel needs to be adjusted. But YOU MUST MAKE ADJUSTMENTS!

Spot healing/patch

If there is anything you want to remove:

Create a new layer and use the Spot Healing or patch tools to clean it up!

Remember to make sure Content-Aware is selected AND Sample All Layers is checked!

Using the masks

Remember on the mask of an adjustment layer (make sure it is selected), we can add black to conseal what we are adjusting!

White=Reveals

Black=Conseals

Make sure your adjustment layers are ON the TOP in the layers panel so that any other alterations (spot healing etc) are adjusted also!

ADD A VIGNETTE!

(all images MUST have this!)

Remember! PULL to the left to use the Dark Vignette!!!

ADD A SIGNATURE!

(all images MUST have this!)

Remember! If your image area is dark, make your signature WHITE. If the image area is light, make your signature BLACK!

Make sure you have added the vignette AND your signature!

Each image MUST have YOUR signature on the bottom right!

EXPORTING Your FILES

Please make sure it is a JPG file!

You will export 6 images:

First Name Last Name Shallow3.jpg

First Name Last Name Wide3.jpg

CRITERIA:

6 Images of YOUR choice of subjects using Depth of Field!
You will shoot 3 different subjects twice:
- The first Subject must show SHALLOW DEPTH OF FIELD
- The same Subject must show WIDE/DEEP DEPTH OF FIELD
- Continue with the next 2 subjects!
Each image MUST be edited appropriately in Photoshop
Each image MUST have a signature and a Vignette
Each image MUST be named correctly
