The ability to capture the moving world around us.
WHAT ARE WE LEARNING: Motion in Photography
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT: Motion photography is about showing movement. Adding a slight blur of the action to your shot helps tell a story. This storytelling element makes the images a little less static and unexpected. Images with movement tend to be eye-catching; they drag the viewer into the frame and force the eye to glide along with the moving elements.
HOW WILL MY TEACHER KNOW WHAT I LEARNED: You will practice different techniques and gradually show your success!

To freeze action and keep your moving subject(s) sharp you will need a fast shutter speed. The faster your subject is moving, the faster your shutter speed will need to be.
1/250th of a second is usually fast enough to freeze motion.
1/500th of a second is fast enough to freeze a moving athlete.
1/1000 of a second may be needed for even faster subjects, such as fast moving vehicles.
Panning is where you “follow” the movement of your subject with your camera, using a slower shutter speed than normal, so that you get a blurred background but a sharp subject (or at least a somewhat sharp subject!)
Panning works best - and is easiest to do - with subjects that are following a straight path.
You also want a subject that goes directly across the frame - it doesn’t work for subjects coming toward or away from you.
So, to do this, choose a slower shutter speed than normal, and follow the motion of the subject with your camera. Press the shutter, and continue to move the camera, even after the shutter has closed.
Because your camera stays aligned with the moving subject, it should stay sharp.
Go for a slower shutter speed, but not TOO slow (to avoid camera shake).
Start with a shutter speed of 1/100.
As your tracking gets better, start lowering the shutter speed...Try getting to a shutter speed of 1/30 while “panning” your subject.
Follow along at the same speed as your subject!
For this shot, try using a high/greater depth of field (higher setting)

In a motion blur image, the moving object should appear blurry, while the subject remains sharp.
A slower shutter speed allows a subject to move while the camera is still recording the image, causing a blurred effect. The slower your subject is moving, the slower your shutter speed will need to be to produce a blur.
Any time you are using a shutter speed of 1/30th of second or slower, a TRIPOD IS REQUIRED. This is because during that long of an exposure, camera shake will occur from hand-holding your camera. This will produce an image that is blurry all over (not what we want!) instead of just the moving subject.
Experiment with different shutter speeds to see the different effects you can get when you slow your shutter speed down completely, compared to it being not quite just fast enough.

For this assignment, you will photograph moving objects in three different ways.
You will need a partner!!!
You will photograph MOVING subjects in 3 different ways!
STOP ACTION
Try using a stop action SHUTTER SPEED of 1/1000+ of a second.
The idea is to FREEZE the moving object!
You will name the file:
First Name Last Name FREEZE.psd
Click the Right Cross Key
Let's change the Drive mode to HIGH SPEED CONTINUOUS
This means you click the button and it fires multiple times!
Shoot your Stop action in the bright sun. This allows you to use fast shutter speeds.
BLUR (Panning Photography)
Start with a shutter speed of 1/100
As your tracking gets better, start lowering the shutter speed...
Try getting to a shutter speed of 1/30 while “panning” your subject.
Follow along at the same speed as your subject!
For this shot, try using a high depth of field (higher setting)
You will name the file:
First Name Last Name PAN.psd
Click the Right Cross Key
Let's change the Drive mode to HIGH SPEED CONTINUOUS
This means you click the button and it fires multiple times!
Shoot your blur shot in the shade or at least subdued lighting.
MOTION BLUR (Long Shutter Speed) Tripod needed!
With a tripod- try a SHUTTER SPEED at 1/4 -1/2 of a second.
Subject will stay still but something else in shot will move. For this the camera needs to be VERY still!
You will name the file:
First Name Last Name BLUR.psd
Click the Right Cross Key
Let's change the Drive mode to SINGLE SHOOTING
This means you click the button one shot at a time!
Each day you take photos you will make sure to download images BEFORE leaving class!
Click OPEN (on the left)
Navigate to Desktop> PHOTOGRAPHY folder>MOTION
Select ONE of the subjects/images you would like to work with.
You should have multiple of each motion subject to choose from!
Always select the best image based upon three criteria:
Does it work for your assignment?
Is it a good exposure?
Is the subject in focus?
Is motion shown?
