WHY IS IT IMPORTANT:
Understand how layers work: Using layers, stack content to create exciting designs and captivating images.
Work with layers: In the Layers panel hide, show, reorder, or select content in a Photoshop document.
Why it is important to keep layers and files organized and named correctly!
When you are done...you can now use and organize layers in Photoshop to create a finished digital image!

Learning to use Layers makes managing your content faster and easier!
Create a new layer, add artwork to that layer, and change some properties for the layer...
Working with layers in the layers panel is useful in a lot of ways including for example when you have different elements in an icon or a logo that you need to work on individually without affecting the other elements.

In honor of this momentious day, we will work on a special file!
We need to grab a file first!

Click the Ps Image on the left!
Left click the DOWNLOAD button on the top Left

This will save the file to your Photography 2 (or downloads) folder!
Quick Tip! After you click the download button, notice on the top right corner the download should appear...simply click the file to open!

Save to CREATIVE CLOUD!
Click the Save to CREATIVE CLOUD button
Name the document:
"First Initial Last Initial BURGER"
(Example: TE BURGER)
Click SAVE TO CLOUD DOCUMENTS
How do we know we saved our files to Creative Cloud?

Click on VIEW (on the top menu) and select Fit on Screen!

If you don't see the Layers Panel...
To access the layers in the document you'll open the layers panel… so choose WINDOW then LAYERS (F7 on the Keyboard)
ALSO! Check your workspace...
Click on the WINDOW tab on top
Select Workspace>Essentials (Default)
This will help us be consistent during the class!
How many layers are there?

You will see each layer is LOCKED
(padlock to the right of each layer)
Let's keep them locked...for now!
We LOCK layers so we don't accidentally move or edit them!

Think about it...Let's look at our layers!
Notice we have the following layers:
Cheese
Tomato 2
Layer 2
Layer 3
Tomato 1
Top Bun
Onions
Bottom Bun (KEEP THIS LOCKED!)
Background (KEEP THIS LOCKED!)
How many documents and files do you have named correctly? Do you name them or just keep the name the program gave it? How can you find the document you need?
Most of our layers are named to help keep us organized but...
Layer 2 and Layer 3...How do we know what is on each layer?
The more that we understand what is in/on the layer, the easier it is for us to be able to make changes and explore what we can do differently.
To stay organized (and to help with this project) we need to rename the layers.
But first lets find out what is on each "un-named" layer.
One way to find out...
Layer 2 is visible (eye icon is shown):
Layer 2 is hidden (eye icon is hidden/box is empty):
Look at our image area...
Let's "turn off" Layer 2 by clicking the EYE next to the thumbnail image/Layer 2 in the layers panel
What disappeared in our image area???
Turn Layer 2 back on by clicking the empty box to the left of Layer 2 in the Layers panel.
Oh but there is a better way!
Press Alt and click the eye icon next to Layer 2:
If you want to take a look at the contents of an individual layer, press the Alt key and click on the Eye icon to the left of Layer 2.
This will turn off all layers EXCEPT Layer 2.
What is left? What should we name layer 2?
Double click on Layer 2's name:
The name will be highlighted. You can now type the new name of the layer!
To Identify layer contents quickly we give layers meaningful names.
Let's NAME the layer...
Double click on Layer 2's name (not the thumbnail box)
Name the layer Lettuce
Press Alt and click the eye icon next to the Lettuce layer to turn all layers back on:
Turn all of the layers back on by pressing the Alt key and click on the Eye Icon to the left of the Lettuce Layer
This will turn ON ALL layers
Using the same method, find out what is on Layer 3 and name that layer appropriately?

We now need to move the layers so they are in the correct order!
In the Layers dialog box, click and pull each layer (down and up) until they are in the following order!
TIP: Release the layer when you see the BLUE DOUBLE LINEs where you are placing the layer!

Burger (Layer 3 you renamed)
Lettuce (Layer 2 your renamed)
Bottom Bun (KEEP THIS LOCKED!)

Select the LETTUCE layer
Then click the LOCK icon at the top of the Layers Panel or on the right of the layer to unlock!
The LOCK shown on the layer should disappear (it is UNLOCKED)

Start with the Lettuce layer (leave the Bottom Bun and Background layer LOCKED and where they are!)

Using the MOVE tool, move the Lettuce down on top of the bottom bun!

First, decide what item you want to move.
UNLOCK that layer only!
Let's Move the LETTUCE! Click the lock next to the Lettuce layer to unlock it!
Now, using the MOVE TOOL, simply click and drag the ingredient into place.
Remember to LOCK THE LAYER when you are done moving the ingredient!
Make sure the layer to be locked is selected, then click the LOCK icon on the top of the Layers Panel!
Remember! Don't pull on the "Handles" or edges. That will scale/distort the item!

Let's make a DOUBLE CHEESBURGER!
Turn off a few layers...

We turn off layers so layer we need to manipulate or move are easier to see!
Turn OFF the Top Bun, Onions, Tomato 1 and Tomato 2 layers! (Click the eye to hide the layers)
Don't worry we will turn them back on later!
Now you have a COPY of the Cheese Layer and a COPY of the Burger layer:

Select the BURGER layer, then select the LAYER Tab the Duplicate Layer
Click OK in the box
(Or drag the BURGER layer the + at the bottom of the Layers Panel)
Select the CHEESE layer, then select the LAYER Tab the Duplicate Layer
Click OK in the box
(Or drag the CHEESE layer the + at the bottom of the Layers Panel)
Now there should be a Copy of the CHEESE layer and a copy of the BURGER layer!
Why can't we see two pieces of cheese? Or two burgers?

Turn off (click the EYE) the Top Bun, Onions, Tomato 1, Tomato 2 layers while working on your duplicate layers.

Turn them BACK ON AFTER you have MOVED and LOCKED the Cheese and burger layers!
Now that we have have doubled the cheese and the burger... It's YOUR TURN to make it correct!

Now move the other ingredients into place (based on what you have learned)
Using the MOVE TOOL simply click and drag each ingredient into place.
Remember to LOCK the layer when you are done moving the ingredient!

In order to share the image with others (online or who otherwise don't have Photoshop) we need to Export our image to a different format.
Choose
File>Export>Export As
In the dialog box on the right under File Settings:
Format: JPG
Quality: 7
Click EXPORT
Save the JPG files in your Photography folder on your desktop!
File Name: First Initial Last Initial BURGER
Save as type: JPG (*jpg)
Click SAVE
File should be named:
First Initial Last Initial BURGER.jpg

Do not close Photoshop!!!
Being able to add and rename layers helps you organize and manage your content.
As you get more comfortable with layers, you'll find that adding and renaming them is especially useful for complex projects that use multiple objects and elements!
