What you NEED to know!!!!

WHAT ARE WE LEARNING: Adobe Photoshop, Adjustment Layers and more!

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT: Adjustment layers enable non-destructive editing by overlaying tonal and color adjustments. They provide a flexible editing workflow, allowing changes to be tweaked or removed at any time. Mastery of adjustment layers can enhance creative control and preserve image quality.

Students: "I will be able to use selection tools in Adobe Photoshop to select specific parts of an image and apply adjustment layers to edit color while keeping the original image intact."

OPEN PHOTOSHOP

Simple selections 2 (Dogs in Frames!)

Learn how to make selections and adjust with layers.

We need to grab a file first!

Click the Ps Image on the left!

Left click the DOWNLOAD button on the top right

This will save the file to your Photography or Downloads folder!

Quick Tip! After you click the download button, notice on the top right corner the download should appear...simply click the file to open!

SAVE (as) YOUR DOCUMENT!

Shortcut: Shift + Ctrl + S

(or File: SAVE AS)

Save to CREATIVE CLOUD!

Click the Save to CREATIVE CLOUD button

Name the document:

"First Initial Last Initial DOGS"

(Example: TE DOGS)

Click SAVE TO CLOUD DOCUMENTS

What Selection Tools should you use?

Yesterday, we tried the Rectangular Marquee tool, Elliptical Marquee tool, Lasso tool, and Polygonal Lasso tool.

Learning selection basics

Use a selection to edit part of an image.

Rectangles/Squares

Rectangular and square selections

The Rectangular Marquee tool is used to make rectangular and square selections.

Select the Rectangular Marquee tool in the Tools panel. Click and drag to make a rectangular selection.

If you want a square selection, press the Shift key as you’re dragging.

Circles/Ovals

Oval and circular selections

The Elliptical Marquee tool is for making oval and circular selections.

Click and drag to start a selection.

With your finger still down on the mouse (don't let go!), press the Space bar on the keyboard too; then push the selection back to the edge of the object you want to select.

With your finger still down on the mouse, release your finger from the Space bar only, and continue to drag out an oval selection.

YOUR TASK:

Using the Rectangular or Elliptical Marquee tools

Click and pull a rectangle or ellipse on the INSIDE of ONE of the picture frames...selecting just the photo in the frame (look for the Marching ants!)

Layers Panel:

Make sure the FRAMES Layer is selected

Go to the bottom of the Layers panel and click the Create New Fill or Adjustment Icon

Choose Solid Color

Color Picker:

Now you can select a color from the swatches (notice your cursor is now the eyedropper)

Click on a ONE of the Color Swatches at the bottom of the image

Click OK

Layers Panel

You will see that this created a new color fill layer in the layers panel (notice the mask!)

Tint

Now with the Color Fill adjustment layer selected, go to the Blend mode pull down menu...

Click and select COLOR

Repeat the process for EACH dog image using a different color from the bottom color swatches! (You MUST use each color once ... TWO (2) will be used twice (2x)!

When you are done...

Turn OFF the Colors Layer!

Do you remember how to turn OFF a layer?

After you make a selection, you can re-position it by clicking inside the marching ants with a selection tool and dragging. You also can re-shape the selection by choosing Select > Transform Selection and dragging any of the edges or corners of the boundary.
