WHAT ARE WE LEARNING: Depth of Field
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT: A higher depth of field would see the whole image from foreground to background sharp and in focus, a lower depth would result in blurry backgrounds and blurred elements in the foreground too. Understanding this helps us create unique and different perspectives in photography!
HOW WILL MY TEACHER KNOW WHAT I LEARNED: You will follow along with instruction and use what we have learned to create amazing photos using DOF!
The amount of space focused on at one time controlled by the aperture.
Is a critical skill that any photographer needs to know how to control.
It allows you to decide the “look” of your images

Double click to open the folder on your desktop.
If you do NOT have a Photography folder, MAKE ONE (right click...New Folder)
Create a NEW FOLDER INSIDE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY FOLDER
(right click...New Folder)
Name the folder:
DOF
(stands for Depth of Field)
For this assignment, you will need to take photographs of the same object twice. The goal is to capture the essential elements of the subject and draw the viewer's attention to those specific details.
Deep/Wide DOF f32
Name example: First Initial Last Initial Wide1
Notice the background is in focus also
Shallow DOF f6.3
Name example: First Initial Last Initial Shallow1
Notice the background is in blurred
CHECK YOUR SETTINGS...
Set your camera to M!
You are in control of ALL settings again!
M (Manual)
Set your ISO to 100! (Base ISO)
You will adjust this accordingly.
Remember, once you set your shutter speed and aperture, check the ISO to make sure the exposure meter is in the center!
SHUTTER SPEED:
No slower than 1/125 (to eliminate camera shake)
Remember this does NOT allow alot of light in! You must adjust the ISO and, of course, aperture will be adjusted for DOF!
Click the Right Cross Key
Lets change the Drive mode to SINGLE SHOOTING
This means you click the button one shot at a time!
It is best to choose a good subject AND an interesting background. Plain walls will NOT work!
Shallow/Narrow Depth of Field
Subject 1 (Photo 1):
For the first shot, open up the aperture as OPEN as you can. (f4.5 if possible)
This will depend on how much you’re zoomed in. (try not to zoom in...get closer!)
This will give a SHALLOW Depth of Field.
Wide/Deep Depth of Field:
Subject 1 (Photo 2):
For the next shot of the SAME SUBJECT, shoot it at F22.
This should give a WIDE Depth of Field.
Take your time... Focus on one idea and take a few options. Don't rush!
Deep/Wide DOF f22
Name example: First Initial Last Initial Wide2
Notice the background is in focus also
Shallow DOF f6.3
Name example: First Initial Last Initial Shallow2
