Let's Begin!
Take a look at the LAYERS Panel on the bottom right of your screen!
All Layers in a file are listed in the Layers Panel.
TO the left of EACH layer is a space for an EYE icon.
Only layers displaying the EYE icon are visible in the image
Turning the visibility of a layer off or on lets you try out different designs. I's also a good way to check out what's hidden behind another layer
How many layers are there?
Parrots Layer ON (Eye Icon is visible)
Parrots Layer OFF (Eye Icon is NOT visible)
What if we turn OFF the Parrots Layer?
Click the EYE Icon to the left of the PARROTS layer...the parrots disappear!
Click the EYE Icon AGAIN to the left of the PARROTS layer to turn the layer back ON!
Red Bird Layer OFF (Eye Icon is NOT visible))
Parrots Layer ON (Eye Icon is visible)
Let's turn ON a few other layers to add more design elements.
Click the empty box to the left of the RED BIRD Layer to turn the layer ON
Banana Leaves & Single Leaf Layers are ON (Eye Icon is visible)
Let's turn ON the BANANA Leaves Layer AND the SINGLE LEAF layer.
Click the empty box to the left of each Layer to turn the layers ON
Note: Leave the RAINBOW layer OFF!
Flamingo is currently behind the banna leaves
Now, we need to move the PINK FLAMINGO in front of all the banana leaves so the flamingo is easier to see.
To do that you will re-order layers in the layers panel.
Drag the Flamingo Layer above the Banana Leaves Layer. When you see a BLUE line LET GO!
Find the FLAMINGO LAYER in the Layers Panel.
Drag the FLAMINGO LAYER above the BANANA LEAVES layer. Release when you see a BLUE LINE!
You successfully changed the layer order in the layers panel!
The Flamingo Layer is selected!
The pink flamingo looks small compared to the other birds.
Since the flamingo is on it's own layer, we can make it bigger without effecting what is on the other layers.
Make sure to select the FLAMINGO layer (it should be highlighted in the Layers Panel). If not click in the empty space of the flamingo layer to select it!
Select Edit>Transform>Scale
At the top left of the screen, click the EDIT tab
Then select TRANSFORM>SCALE
Pull on the top right handle to scale!
Notice ONLY THE FLAMINGO LAYER changed size! All the other layers remain unaffected!
A box appears around all the content on the Flamingo Layer. Drag the top right handle (Corner square) of the box outward (to the right and up) to make the flamingo a little bigger!
Press ENTER or RETURN on your keyboard to complete the change!
Or click the check mark on the top of the screen...
Select the RED BIRD layer
What if we want TWO red birds?
A quick way to do this is to DUPLICATE the red bird layer!
Select the RED BIRD layer
Select Layer>Duplicate Layer
At the top left of the screen...
Select the LAYER tab
Select DUPLICATE LAYER
A dialog box pops up
Leave this window as is
Click OK!
Red Bird Copy layer...
There is now a RED BIRD COPY layer in the Layers Panel.
Why can't we see two birds?
Because the additional bird in the image is right on top of the original bird!
Select the MOVE (V) tool
Make sure when you move an item to click and pull from the center. Try NOT to pull on and edge or handle!
Select the MOVE tool (or press V on your keyboard!)
Drag the red bird copy away from the original red bird.
Be careful not to pull on the handles/edges or you will scale it!
Move the red bird copy to the other vine towards the middle.
Edit>Transform>Scale
Let's make the red bird copy look different than the original red bird.
Choose the EDIT tab
then Transform>Scale
Drag the handle inward to make the red bird copy smaller.
Drag the top right corner (handle) of the blue box INWARD to make the red bird copy a little smaller than the original red bird.
Press ENTER or RETURN on your keyboard to complete the change!
Edit>Transform>Flip Horizontal
Now, choose the EDIT tab again
Select Transform>Flip Horizontal
The Red Bird Copy is now facing to the left!
Select the Rainbow layer AND turn it ON!
Now, Select the RAINBOW Layer
Click the empty box to the left of the Rainbow layer to turn it ON (the EYE icon should appear!)
Rainbow layer is ON with it's black background :(
What happened?
The Rainbow layer includes this BLACK BACKGROUND that we don't want showing in the image!
Layer Panel Blend Mode...
In the LAYERS PANEL...
Look at the top of the Layers Panel for the "Normal" pulldown.
This is the LAYER BLEND MODE MENU!
Layer Panel Blend Mode... Choose SCREEN
Click on the word NORMAL
A pull down menu will appear.
Click on SCREEN
The Screen Blend Mode magically hides all the black pixels on the Rainbow layer, leaving ONLY the colord of the rainbow on that layer!
See the BLUE LINE when you drag?
Drag the Rainbow Layer below the Vines Layer
Now, Drag the Rainbow Layer below the VINES layer and release when you see a BLUE line!
Now the Rainbow Layer is behind the vines and all the foreground elements!
The assignment!
Ctrl+Alt+Delete then select SIGN OFF!
