WHAT ARE WE LEARNING: Repetition

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT: Repetition is important in photography because it can create rhythm, balance, and visual interest. It can also add depth and dimension to an image.

HOW WILL MY TEACHER KNOW WHAT I LEARNED: You will follow along with instruction and use what we have learned to create amazing photos of repetative items!

For Part 1 of REPETITION assignment...

REPETITION:

The recurrence of same or similar elements within a compostion.

PATTERN:

A structured arrangement of repeated elements to create a visual effect.

The Assignment...

For this assignment, you will need to take photographs showing repetition/pattern. The goal is to capture the essential elements of the image and draw the viewer's attention to those specific details.

For this assignment, you will need to pick 3 DIFFERENT subjects, in 3 DIFFERENT places of REPETITION or PATTERN...

YOU choose what you are shooting! Do NOT just copy these!

Remember to make sure the image showcase the repetition/pattern! It's NOT just a random photo!

Remember to be creative! Look for interesting patterns/repetitions around campus!

To shoot REPETITION...

Set your camera to M!

You are in control of ALL settings again!

M (Manual)

Set your ISO to 100!

Click the Right Cross Key

Lets change the Drive mode to SINGLE SHOOTING

This means you click the button one shot at a time!

TIPS!

Zoom in to Create Abstract Scenes

If you look hard enough in most places, it’s likely you’ll see repetition somewhere. This could be in blades of grass, floor tiles, apartment buildings, patterns in nature, and so much more.

By zooming into these elements, you can capture a simple pattern that emphasizes the composition. You can photograph these patterns either straight on or at an angle. Each method will provide a unique look at the subject.

Use an Element to Break Repeating Patterns

Once you find these patterns, it can be fun to go against the grain and introduce a new element into the frame. Think of a hot air balloon amongst the clouds or a frog poking its head out of a pond filled with lily pads. This composition technique will add special focus to the subject.

Find Patterns in Repetition of Colors

Trying to find repetitions in forms can be easy. But when looking for repetition in color, it’s a bit trickier. You might notice situations where the same color repeats in different subjects. This is something to look for in street photography. Maybe a person is wearing the same color T-shirt as a passing car or advertisement behind them.

You don’t have to look out for the same color. Finding repetition in a series of colors is tricky but can be visually pleasing. It is most successful when dealing with complementary colors, gradients, or repetition of two or more particular colors.

Use Multiple Repeating Patterns in One Image

If you think in the context of patterns, you will often find two or more repeating patterns in the same environment. For example, it could be a fence in front of a brick wall or umbrellas on a beach contrasted with the waves. Placing these two repeating elements together can create some stunning imagery.

This type of image can be challenging to get right. It all depends on what composition technique you use when you identify these two or more elements. I suggest composing your shot in a way that shows only the repeating elements. If there are other subjects in the photo, it can be hard for the viewer to identify the patterns.

Get low! Take the repetition from DIFFERENT ANGLES!

Think of YOUR Point of view to get the perfect repetition!

Add Press the Q button on the top left of the LCD screen

Auto Focus Area (top left AF button):

How much of your camera is able to see with your auto focus

Spot: only that little box will have it in focus. Good for Portraits.

Whole Area Auto Focus: Camera will determine what needs to be in focus.

Good for Landscapes

Take your time... Focus on one idea and take a few options/angles.

Don't rush!

Downloading your photos...

To Split the screens (to see them better):

Editing your photos!

Open Photoshop

Click OPEN (on the left)

Navigate to Desktop> PHOTOGRAPHY folder> REPETITION

Select ONE of the subjects/images you would like to work with.

Always select the best image based upon this criteria:

Does it work for your assignment?

Is it a good exposure?

Is it in focus?

Click OPEN

CHOOSE YOUR BEST IMAGES! If they don't meet the criteria, check out a camera and go shoot some more!

SAVE (as) YOUR DOCUMENT!

Shortcut: Shift + Ctrl + S

(or File: SAVE AS)

Save as Type: PHOTOSHOP!

Then click Save to Cloud Documents

Save to CREATIVE CLOUD!

Click the Save to CREATIVE CLOUD button

Name the photo:

Photo 1:

"First Initial Last Initial Nature Repetition"

Photo 2:

"First Initial Last Initial Man Made Repetition"

Photo 3:

"First Initial Last Initial Choice Repetition"

(You get the idea...when you are done you will be turning in 3 images!)

Click SAVE

If you have selected your best Repetition photo you can do the same process for other photos of a different repetitions!

(Open through Photoshop, Save as, Save to Creative Cloud)

Editing your photos!

Adjusting using layers

Remember to use an ADJUSTMENT LAYER (in the layers panel: click the adjustment icon) so it is non-destructive

Adjust such things as:

Brightness/Contrast
Exposure
Vibrance
Hue/Saturation
Color Balance
Black & White

Make Adjustments as needed! (And they are needed!)

If the photo is dull, brighten it!

If the photo is under-exposed...use Exposure!

Make the adjustments!!!

Edits are subjective! They are what YOU feel needs to be adjusted. But YOU MUST MAKE ADJUSTMENTS!

Spot healing/patch

If there is anything you want to remove:

Create a new layer and use the Spot Healing or patch tools to clean it up!

Remember to make sure Content-Aware is selected AND Sample All Layers is checked!

Remove distractions! No trash, cracks in sidewalk etc

Make the adjustments!!!

Using the masks

Remember on the mask of an adjustment layer (make sure it is selected), we can add black to conseal what we are adjusting!

White=Reveals

Black=Conseals

Make sure your adjustment layers are ON the TOP in the layers panel so that any other alterations (spot healing etc) are adjusted also!

ADD A VIGNETTE!

Remember! PULL to the left to use the Dark Vignette!!!

ADD A SIGNATURE!

(all images MUST have this!)

Remember! If your image area is dark, make your signature WHITE. If the image area is light, make your signature BLACK!

Make sure you have added the vignette AND your signature!

Each image MUST have YOUR signature on the bottom right!

EXPORTING Your FILES

Please make sure it is a JPG file!

You will export 3 images:

First Initial Last Initial Choice Repetition.jpg

CRITERIA:

3 Images of YOUR choice of repetition/patterns!
You will shoot 3 different Repetition/Pattern images...with different subjects and in different places (come up with 3 DIFFERENT IDEAS!)
Each image MUST be edited appropriately in Photoshop
Each image MUST have a signature
Each image MUST be named correctly
